Faced with tremendous challenges as regards the protection of cultural heritage and cultural preservation in crisis regions it is crucially important to educate young experts in a timely manner. This is where the Joint Master in “Heritage Conservation and Site Management” comes in. It is implemented by the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg in cooperation with the Helwan University (Cairo) with the support of the German Archaeological Institute and the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities. The introduction of this study course was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD); since 2016 the DAAD has provided fellowships for Syrian refugees as part of the “Zero Hour” project. The joint master programme aims to provide the knowledge and methods necessary for the protection and management of heritage sites. The modules offered deal primarily with strategies and work approaches related to heritage conservation and site management but they also cover tourism and visitor management. In addition, students complete two practical study projects, which provide insights into their future working life.

The applicants have to decide before the start of their studies whether to choose the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg or the Helwan University as their home university. An important part of the study programme is a compulsory foreign semester at the partner university. The programme structure is as follows: 1st semester at the home university, 2nd semester at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, 3d semester at Helwan University, 4th semester at the home university.

Graduates of the study programme will be qualified for professional fields of activity at a large range of public and private institutions which are active in heritage conservation, site management and the tourism sector. Likewise, graduates of this study programme have the opportunity to embark upon an academic career.
